Ingredients

Buns

  • 1¼ cups (5 oz.) 300 ml (140 g) almond flour
  • 5 tbsp 5 tbsp ground psyllium husk powder
  • 2 tsp 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp 1 tsp sea salt
  • 2 tsp 2 tsp cider vinegar
  • 1¼ cups 300 ml boiling water
  • 3 3 egg whiteegg whites
  • sesame seeds (optional)

Meat sauce

  • 2 tbsp 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 (4 oz.) 1 (110 g) yellow onion, choppedyellow onions, chopped
  • 4 4 garlic clove, mincedgarlic cloves, minced
  • 1½ lbs 650 g ground beef or ground turkey
  • 4 tbsp 4 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1½ cups (13 oz.) 350 ml (350 g) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 tbsp 1 tbsp chili powder
  • 1 tbsp 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tbsp 1 tbsp red wine vinegar
  • 2 tsp 2 tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp ¼ tsp ground black pepper

Toppings

  • ½ cup 120 ml mayonnaise or vegan mayonnaise
  • 1½ cups (6 oz.) 350 ml (170 g) mozzarella cheese, shredded

Making low carb simple

Instructions

Instructions are for 4 servings. Please modify as needed.

Buns

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Mix the dry ingredients in a bowl.

  2. Add the vinegar, boiling water, and egg whites to the bowl. Whisk the dough with a hand mixer for about 30 seconds. Don’t overmix it. (You want the consistency to resemble Play-Doh.)

  3. With moistened hands, form the dough into 4 or 8 pieces of bread.

  4. Bake on lower rack in oven for 50–60 minutes, depending on the size of your bread. They’re done when you hear a hollow sound when tapping the bottom of the bun.

Meat sauce

  1. Sauté onion and garlic in a large frying pan over medium high until the onion is soft and translucent.

  2. Add the ground beef to the pan and increase the heat a little. Fry the meat thoroughly.

  3. Add the other ingredients and mix well.

  4. Let simmer for at least 15 minutes on low heat until most of the liquid is reduced.

  5. Taste and add more seasoning if needed.

  6. Serve in low-carb bread with a lot of shredded cheese and a dollop of mayonnaise.

    Which is the real recipe for low carb bread/buns? The sloppy joe recipe has bread recipe that is the same recipe but salt and almond flour are different proportions than when you do a just search for just the bread. Salt seems like too much. Had the same problem when I made the Naan recipe; it came out too salty.

    I made this last night. The bread "looked" incredible but it did not taste like bread much, unfortunately. We were very disappointed! It was "slippery" on my tongue--don't know how to describe it. I made the sloppy joe with the hamburger and it tasted ok. Most of the time with these recipes, I have to make sure I add spices or it will be too bland--and I don't like hot-spicy..so that's saying something! Now I have all this left over sloppy joe hamburger but don't want to eat it with the bread! Today for lunch, I cut a bun in half and put butter in a pan, melted it and placed the buns cut side down and toasted them. Then I put some peanut butter on them! That was pretty good! Now trying to figure out what to make for dinner tonight with all the extra sloppy joe mix that we didn't eat last night! What to do??!!

    The bread puffed up and became hollow on top. The bottom was very heavy. I was confused on the hollow sound so I took them out at 50 minutes but they weren't done. I baled them for 20 minutes more and still didn't seem quite some on the bottom. The sloppy Joe mixture could use more spices for flavor. Not sure what would be best for the bread.

    We love these buns in our healthy lifestyle. I like to split the 5 tablespoons ground psyllium husk powder into 2 1/2 Tbsp of oat fiber and 2 1/2 Tbsp of the psyllium. We like the texture when made with the oat fiber just a little better (not that they are not good just as they are because they are). I make these buns almost every week to keep on hand for quick burgers or sandwiches. Thanks for a great recipe! We are having the sloppy joe mix tonight on the buns for the first time.

    The buns turned out fine except that sliced open the bread has a light lilac (purple) color to it. The buns had a good texture with the outside brown and crusty. Any idea of how to change the color?

    Baked the bread for nearly two hours because it was gooey and almost purple inside at one hour. Tops are hollow. Going to try them tomorrow since we were done with dinner before They were done. Smell good!

    Wow, so disappointed in the bread. It doesn’t turn out anything like the photo nor does it ever sound “hollow”. Save the money and frustration and just make the sloppy joe mix.

    I made the bread and it turned out perfect I would use this again I found the sloppy joe tasty but would only use 1 tsp of salt next time.

    Made these for lunch and was really pleased with the buns, although I could have baked them a little longer I think. I really dressed up the sloppy joe mix using ancho and chipotle powders, increasing the amounts and adding cayenne powder, worchestershire sauce, extra red wine vinegar, onion and garlic powders, and it was really really good! I want to try making a vinegar slaw to go with it next time;

    any idea how many carbs this is without the bread? I was out to dinner last night and they had a really good sounding sloppy joe on the menu but opted for steak with butter instead, but the "idea" of sloppy joe is till lingering, and Im still doing under 20 carbs per day.

    I don't have the nutrition information broken down by recipe component. Please also remember though that a restaurant sloppy joe may have additional ingredients like sugars and starches so it may not be a good LCHF option.

    Cutting the carb count in this recipe would be difficult as the majority of the carbs are coming from the tomatoes and other ingredients used to make the sauce itself.

    I get the beard out of the oven @ 50 min. Turn off the oven and lift the buns out gently and lean them to the side of the pan and put them I. The oven for 10-15 min more. The bottom will be baked better.

    The nutrition will always vary based on your choices/brands of ingredients. Ours came out to 6g net carbs, 17.5g fat, 10.2g protein, & 277 calories per bun. We ran with 4 serving option and made 4 buns. We also used the metric measurements as I find weight is better with baking. I would recommend throwing the recipe into something like mfp to help if your serious about needing exact. I found the bread to be very gooey and slimey when eating by itself and with the sloppy joe mix... Almost like it starts to slime when it hits anything liquid. The sloppy joe mix was okay, but had about the same amount of carbs as a store bought brand and was I was overwhelmed by the taste of canned tomato.

I took the advice of some of the posters and added garlic powder and chipoltle powder; it needed a little extra zing. A splash of hot sauce here and there made it a winner. Will be making this again.

    If you subtract the bread recipe macro amounts from the sloppy joe recipe, it seems like it would be about right for the sloppy joes alone. Since I am the only person that eats Keto in our home, I eat it plain or over cauliflower etc. I made 6 servings and put the extra in serving size globs on a plate and froze it. I liked the sloppy joe mix OK but I like it runnier so might add some broth next time.
